The 2K Is the Filter, Not the Finish Line

Start with the part every recruiting conversation gets right: the 2K matters. A physiological study of elite rowers by Ingham and colleagues in the European Journal of Applied Physiology found that a handful of engine measurements, peak power and oxygen uptake among them, explained 98 percent of the variance in 2K ergometer performance. The machine is an honest test of the motor. One rowing writer put the folk version well: "ergs don't float, but they don't lie either." No amount of talk about intangibles changes the fact that at selective programs, a 2K outside the recruitable range means the conversation never starts. What this article does is explain what happens to your number after you send it, because that is where most families' picture of recruiting stops matching how coaches actually work.

How important is the erg score in college rowing recruiting?

The erg is the threshold that opens your file, and at competitive programs it is close to absolute in that role. Coaches receive far more threshold-clearing inquiries than they have spots, which produces the structure the rest of this article describes: the number determines whether you enter the pool, and other factors determine who gets pulled out of it.

The clearest published evidence comes from Harvard's men's lightweight program, whose recruiting page, current for this cycle, lists its evaluation priorities in numbered order: academic performance first, then extracurriculars, then the endorsement of the athlete's own coaches, then on-water performance, and erg standards fifth. Fifth. This is one of the most selective rowing programs in the country, with erg standards among the most demanding anywhere, telling recruits in writing that four other things outrank the number once you have it. The same page asks recruits for height, weight, age, training volume, and how their 2K breaks down by 500 meter segments, because the program reads erg profiles rather than erg scores.

What do coaches actually do with your 2K?

Less than families imagine, and more carefully. Most top programs publish no hard cutoff at all. Princeton, Washington, and Tennessee, among many others, route every recruit to a questionnaire that collects the full picture: 2K and 6K, height and weight, years in the sport, grades, test scores, video. The erg is one field on the form. Programs that do publish numbers tend to publish ranges rather than lines: Marist's men's page reports that recruited athletes in recent years have arrived with 2Ks spanning more than forty seconds, from 6:12 to 6:55, because the score is read against height, age, experience, and everything else on the form.

Coaches also read the score across time. A junior at 6:35 whose curve has dropped ten seconds a year, with two inches of height still coming and three years in the sport, reads differently than a senior at 6:28 who has tested flat for eighteen months after six years of hard training. Both numbers clear plenty of thresholds. Only one suggests where the athlete will be as a college junior, which is the question a coach is actually paid to answer. This is why programs ask for training volume and erg histories: they are estimating headroom, and a single test cannot show it.

Why doesn't the fastest erg win the recruiting class?

Because the machine measures the engine and boats are moved by more than engines. The erg is stationary, rewards absolute mass and leverage, and hides technique. Research bears this out in both directions. Allometric studies of sculling have found that raw erg speed explained under a third of the variance in on-water speed, and that adjusting erg scores for bodyweight roughly doubled the model's power, because heavier athletes carry an advantage on a fixed machine that they pay for in a hull. One small study of elite rowers in The Sport Journal found essentially no correlation between 2K erg rank and 2K on-water rank within the group, a finding to hold loosely given the sample, but one that matches what every coach sees each spring.

The coaches themselves say this plainly. In row2k's crew selection series, Bill Zack of San Diego State described the raw erg score as "a prerequisite for boat selection more than a determining factor," and the other coaches interviewed drew the same two-tier picture from different angles: Dartmouth's Dan Roock respects the correlation while noting an erg measures ergs, Duke's Megan Cooke Carcagno calls the erg a starting point that shows power and tenacity while hiding boat-moving skill, and Cornell's Todd Kennett described weighting the erg heavily in early spring and then progressively discarding it as water time accumulates. Why do coaches recruit the curve instead of the snapshot?

Because junior results are startlingly weak predictors of senior results, and the research here has become overwhelming. A 2024 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine by Barth, Gullich, and colleagues, pooling 129 effects across more than 13,000 athletes, found junior performance explained about 2 percent of the reliable variance in senior performance. A companion analysis found that international-level juniors and international-level seniors are, to a first approximation, different people: 89 percent of top juniors never reached that level as seniors, and 82 percent of top seniors had never been top juniors.

Rowing follows the pattern in its own data. A 2023 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research tracked 54 male rowers from age fifteen and found that the future Olympic and world championship medalists kept improving their 2K until age 24, while less successful rowers plateaued earlier, and, most strikingly, the rowers who did NOT become elite were posting the faster numbers until age 18. The juniors who looked best at recruiting age were frequently the wrong bet. Add that Olympic rowing finalists have been getting older for decades, and that British Rowing does not even begin talent identification until athletes turn fifteen, and the recruiting implication is hard to miss: a college coach who buys a senior-year snapshot is buying the least predictive thing about you. What does chasing the number cost?

The trap in all of this is treating the threshold as a target to be maximized rather than cleared. Improvement on the erg decelerates as training age rises: beginners drop large chunks quickly, experienced juniors fight for single seconds, and the volume required to force a plateaued score downward is exactly the input that rowing's injury research warns about. In the rib stress fracture literature, ergometer training load showed the strongest association with injury risk in one prospective national-squad cohort, with the reviewers' own caution that volume is one factor among several. The pediatric consensus points the same direction: the American Academy of Pediatrics links intensive early specialization in endurance sports to overuse injury, overtraining, and burnout, and notes that athletes who specialize later may be more likely to reach their goals, a finding that should sound familiar after the trajectory research above.

None of this argues against hard training. It argues against a specific pattern: a junior with a threshold-clearing score sacrificing sleep, health, technique work, and enjoyment of the sport to move a 6:24 to a 6:19, when the coaches evaluating them have said in print that the second number buys almost nothing the first did not, and the file will be decided on everything else. Past the threshold, the marginal seconds are the most expensive and least valuable seconds in rowing.

Is my erg score good enough for college rowing?

Here is the honest procedure. Look up the current ranges for your division, weight class, and target tier in the erg standards guide. If your score sits inside or near the range for programs you care about, the threshold question is answered or answerable, and your recruiting time is better spent on the factors that decide files: racing well, developing boat skills, running your own recruiting correspondence, and being able to talk about your training like someone who understands it. If your score sits well outside the range, drop your target tier or extend your timeline, because erg scores alone will not close the gap and the tiers below the most selective programs are full of excellent rowing.

And whatever the number is, present it as a curve. Send the history, the context, the height and age and training volume, the way the Harvard questionnaire asks for it, because a coach projecting four years forward can do far more with a trajectory than with a personal best.
