Who this is for

This week suits the sculler who trains through the year and would like six days on Lake Lucerne with close attention to their rowing. You row from Seeclub Luzern, which has rowed the lake from the city since 1881, with a local coach who knows the water.

The rowing and swimming standard is in the booking terms.

The week

You arrive and we meet the train at Lucerne station, beside the hotel. Sessions go out early while the lake is calm, the morning's work is talked through over lunch, and the afternoon is lighter. Dinner is together each evening and the fourth day is a rest day. The last morning is a timed piece. That afternoon you and your coach set down what to carry into your own training.

The week is planned around the water. Sessions and outings can move with weather and conditions.

The ten-page itinerary for Lucerne opens as soon as you send the form.

The coaching

The coaching is the work Sparks has done since 2010: learning when to stay with discomfort, when to attend to effort and how to balance the two. One head coach sets the approach and every coach on the water teaches to it. The aim is that you leave able to read your own rowing and take a sharper approach into your own training.

The water

Seeclub Luzern's clubhouse stands on the Alpenquai, a short walk along the shore from the hotel. The water in front of it opens onto the lake with the Alps at the far end. Mornings here are usually still, which is why the first session goes out early.

The hotel and the table

The Radisson Blu stands on the lake beside the station and the KKL concert hall. Each guest has a room of their own with no single supplement. Dinner is at one long table in a room kept for the group, with the coaches at it and the food from the region. One evening the table moves out to a local venue (TBD).
